Reviews

I love receiving reviews.

Because, let's be totally honest here, if I wasn't interested in reviews I wouldn't be posting my SPN fanfics to a public forum now, would I?

Even when they can be a bit negative, after I've got over that horrible stomach-dropping feeling, I usually realise, eventually, that it was (probably) done from a position of love.

I like to give a decent review (although I'll admit if I read several chapters in one sitting, I'm unlikely to review each one individually) and sometimes this is my downfall - sometimes I end up not saying anything at all due to lack of time/ennui/position of the stars, etc.

Maybe I should just "favourite"? Some people get really wound up about this, they want a review, but hey it's better than nothing, and I reckon it's proof they at least like it! (With the hit counter you never know if people stopped reading after the first sentence). I don't tend to use this function much myself - I tend to set an alert on the writers I like.

But I've had a couple of cases of people setting alerts on my fanfics which to me are quite clearly complete, and I don't know how to take it. Part of me is "Oh great, you liked that fic. Shame you're too busy to review", the other is "But it's finished! Why must you always demand more, more, more!! The pressure's too much!!".

Maybe I'm over-analysing...

I never did get why people ask add a Chapter Alert when it says 'the end'.

I do like it when people favorite but on my 'real' writing site I prefer reviews because I actually want to get better, not just complimented.

I always feel bad sometimes when I review and I want to point out a story's weak spots but I don't know how the author will take it.

Its interesting how this all got very complicated...

I agree, even a simple "Good!" comment trumps someone ticking the favourite box any day.

The review etiquette's tricky though isn't it. Constructive criticism of someones written work can sometimes come across like criticism of their child, can't it?

I have private-messaged people on occasion if I've spotted a howler of a typo – particularly if it's unintentionally funny, rather than just a minor thing. That way they can correct the mistake and no one has to know!

I used to think it would get easier the more I got to know certain writers – but in some cases it's made me even less likely to say anything.

You're right it is complicated, I just write for fun, but I do want to improve. But sometimes there's more invested in one story than another. In at least one case I just bashed the whole thing out, checked it for typos and that was it – I had no interest in going back.

If the comment was presented constructively and with tact I hope that I would respond favourably!

My self-esteem must have slipped though, because I immediately wondered which weak spot in which of my stories!

Be gentle with me! ;)

When I see a typo I just put: Rouge Beta here--

Sometimes I find typos on my old stories, and I've just stopped caring. If it's a good story and I can give it new life I'll come back to it.

Just remember, the comments could always be worse:

Good grief!

The mentality of some people...

Whatever. You just got to write past it.
